Is Make Up Subjective?

Is Make Up subjective? Is the question i asked myself many times when i started to become a relatable Make Up Artist.

Can everyone benefit from an MUA? YES! of course because the make up world is your oyster and you make it personal to you. From experience i see many ups and downs in this job, but what i see mostly is lots of my clients are stuck in their make up rut. This meaning my over 50s stuck with the "colour to compliment my eyes" phase, drop the blue shadow Susan! Please i beg! Then i get the new kids on the block who want to learn the latest styles and techniques with no habits or rituals whispering in their ear.

And this where i come in, kickstarting your new make up journey and refreshing your minds on what you actually want and can pull off in just one appointment. Yes it is nerve racking having a stranger all up in your personal space and making yes you will look different to how you're used to, but trust is key.

Everyone will have a different level of "natural", i judge this by 1-10, 1 being the bare minimum of product and 10 being as full as you can go. As a Make Up Artist it is my job to try and figure this out for you and of course myself so i can produce the perfect, tailored made make up.

Let's look at this from a bridal perspective, I practice this the most when it comes to my bridal trials. Often my brides will struggle with how to describe how they want their wedding make up, 9/10 its the "non make up make up" look. Throughout the years i have gauged this level of glam and we work together to build it up slowly and most of time we always end up adding more on the big day!

Remember it has to show up on photo/video and last you a 12 hour day.

With this all said, we all look at make up differently, we listen to the stigmas, the dos and don'ts but do we really know what we want?

Take this photo for example, some would perceive this make up to be "Full Glam" and then to another percentage of people would perceive as "Soft Glam". With this in mind, this makes an MUAs job a little tricky when you sit in the chair and pull up Pinterest.

To you, with no fault of your own, the photo will look like a natural, soft, effortless glam. BUT in reality this can be; highly edited, the model could have a different colouring. For make up to show up on photos you need more and this won't relay how you would like in a personal setting. (Picture below of a Pinterest example)

(PS.. this is FULL glam,

mistaken for natural soft glam ALOT)

So, is make up subjective or do we all view it the same, based on what's current or what you're used to?
